Are we ready for a book club?
While talking story with Steven and Doran yesterday, I floated the idea that perhaps this forum might be ready for a book club. Needless to say, I got an enthusiastic response!
It would seem like the kind of activity/human interaction that would go a long way in building community, not to mention that we could learn so much from each other.
Note that I'm not electing myself to be the head of anything here. Lots of folks in this forum are 1) more well-read than I am, and 2) organized enough to make it happen. Oh yeah, I've never been a member of a book club either. (I'm throwing hints out to Steven, Jay, and other cultured readers who might be interested.)
Actually, I'd like to save Jay to lead our future cooking club. :-) I'm smiling as I type this but I'm not kidding.
So whaddaya guys think? Are we ready for a book club?
OMG yes!!!!!!
Let me say it again YES!!!!!!!
yes.
Yes !
Woo buffy ;)
Chooks, you know you want to say yes too....you know you do....<3
{thanks Tim!!}
I say yes! But can I participate when not on the island??
I also say yes to the cooking club, but the same question as above?
I'm in! And I know Rebekah would be all about the cooking club.
Can we have a "Give David foot massages" club too?
It would be very easy to immediately start the book club as a "virtual" thing and use the chat room for it at a scheduled time. This would include our off island folks.
I'd recommend starting with a "sustainability" oriented classic like "3 acres and freedom" and then work into the big lit kind of stuff. Maybe "Grapes of Wrath." LOL. Seems fitting.
My two cents: virtual is good if done as a supplement, with the purpose of bridging physical distances. But nothing beats real, live, interpersonal chat. I've been dipping my toe in the chat room lately. It's kind of fun to talk in short sound bites, but not conducive to fostering deep meaningful conversations. Next we'll be doing twitter, and then we're all doomed. Starting a thread on the book might be a better option. Then there's always skype...
I dunno, guess I see the digital world as a place to start new relationships, but real, live human interaction as the only way to deepen bonds and build trust. Am I wrong?
Maybe everyone interested put up a recommended book with a short, "This is about X" and then we vote for the first one? With that said, 3 acres and freedom sounds quite pertinent :)
Then next book should be the Humanure Handbook so we can discuss our bowel movements :D
I was thinking about the vote approach too, but I like the idea of starting out with something related to sustainability, growing food, etc. as these are issues we know bind us.
Can any former book-club members suggest effective ways of selecting reading material? Is it typically a vote system?
I like the voting idea . I have belonged to book clubs in the past
and usually dropped out because one person took over the choice
of the books. However I think in this group we should
pick books that relate to the forum.
I'm down for voting too. That way everyone passionate about books can get a chance to at least submit titles.
And I like live, its fun to see hand gestures and big eyes, but I can talk books anytime... so I'm down for doing both as well.
Is this a book club for folks to read books or to write books?
Most of the "books" I've ever written have gone way into too many details about water heater systems and the publishing rate, while 100%, had a very low number of copies. Generally less than ten. Fortunately, I was paid by the hour to make these things so it wasn't as grim as it seems. Not overly fascinating reading, either, unless you are ankle deep in water or your elevator shaft is flooded.
Should we all write a haiku while reading these books?
flooded elevator shaft
mosquito heaven..
As for a book club, while it obviously would be more gratifying to bring all of our senses together around a pot of food for such things, I offer up this essay by Ivan Illich entitled, Energy and Equity. While not book club material necessarily, it is worthy of consideration. Particularly, I think these mid-70s ideas of acceleration, overlaid upon the unfolding digital orgy of information, might provide some insight.

Chooks, read I think, but if a writing club is of interest to anyone, I'm down for that too.
That I'd set up and organize, if anyone's game.
Haha maybe our parties could eventually morph into music playing, book writing, yard goods switching, potlucks.
Btw, unrelated topic, the seeds that are kicking ass for me most {right now} are the fresh ones I got from the yard this last year, like my mustard that comes up in 3 days and my kabota squashes and mung beans. Fresh seed switcheroos are the way.
